Wash Day Wednesday 🧼 My daughter chose 100% silk satin for her wedding gown. Beautiful, luminous and incredibly delicate, pressing it felt like the most important ironing of my life! My secret? I used a 100% silk organza press cloth from Dritz @prym.americas @amazonaustralia — sheer enough to see exactly where you are pressing and gentle enough to protect even the most delicate fabrics from direct heat. Press on reverse side of fabric with low to medium heat. Never drag — lift and press gently. Let the steam do the work. No marks or sheen, perfectly pressed silk satin — a @katherinetash gown ready for le grand jour. 🌼 The bride, the bridesmaids, the flower girl and Mother of the bride dresses pressed with love. 🌼 If you have precious garments you’ve been afraid to iron — I hope this gives you the confidence to try. Storing Heirloom Garments — The Right Way: The box: Use an acid free archival box — regular cardboard contains acids that yellow and damage fabric over time Never use plastic containers or bags — they trap moisture and cause mildew and yellowing The box should be large enough that garments aren’t compressed or folded too tightly The tissue paper: Use acid free tissue paper only — regular tissue paper contains acids, try @officeworks Place layers of tissue between every fold to prevent crease lines becoming permanent Loosely stuff sleeves, bodices and skirts with tissue to help garments hold their shape Before storing: Always wash or have garments cleaned before storing — invisible stains from body oils, food or perspiration oxidise over time and become the brown staining you saw on my mother’s wedding dress. Make sure garments are completely dry before packing — any moisture will cause mildew The environment: Store in a cool, dark, dry place — avoid attics and under beds which have temperature fluctuations and humidity Never store in direct sunlight A wardrobe shelf or linen cupboard is ideal Additional tips: Never use regular white tissue — it can transfer colour Add a sachet of lavender for a natural moth deterrent — avoid mothballs which damage fabric and leave permanent odour Label the box clearly with contents and date stored Check on stored garments every year or two — refold along different lines to prevent permanent creasing. For very precious pieces: Consider wrapping in unbleached calico before boxing — it allows the fabric to breathe while protecting from dust Photograph garments before storing so you have a record of their condition. #margueritemaryagatha #washday #heirlooms #vintagegarmentcare

Wednesday Wash 🌼 - Why we restore. Why we keep. Why it matters. Some garments carry more than fabric and thread - they carry our entire lives. Recently I had the privilege of displaying a collection of garments worn by my Mother throughout her extraordinary life, as a tribute to her on her 90th birthday celebration. The dress she wore when she met my Father. Her wedding dress from 70 years ago - later worn by my sister at her wedding. The elegant black suit she chose for my black tie wedding. A suit she wore as Matron of a nursing home. Her own silk hand embroidered christening dress - 90 years old - kept first by her Mother, then by her, and now by me. Before they could be displayed, many of these precious pieces, made by my Grandmother, needed restoration. Decades of storage had left deep oxidized staining on the fabrics especially of the wedding dress and christening gowns. I restored these items using Mieco Natually Better Oxygen Bleach - 100% sodium percarbonate, completely eco friendly, available from @biomestores here in Brisbane. A long gentle soak, careful handwashing and bright sunlight was required. The transformation was extraordinary. This is why I believe in slow fashion. Not as a trend or a label - but as a genuine understanding that the things we wear matter. That they are worth caring for, worth restoring, worth keeping. Your Mother’s wedding dress is worth saving.
